Why Vintage Hunting Feels Like Coming Home
My Store AdminIt always begins in exactly the same way. Something catches my eye and I feel an irresistible need to pick it up. I touch the fabric and slowly examine its texture. I look at the zip, the stitching, the seams and the label. Before I know anything about the garment, I want to understand how it was made.
I am particularly obsessed with crimplene.
When I was a child, I was convinced the fabric was called “grenplina.” My grandmother made clothes and fabrics seemed to be everywhere around her. Rolls of material filled cupboards, scraps covered tables and sewing patterns appeared from drawers as if by magic.
I spent hours making clothes for my dolls from leftover pieces of fabric. Even today I can remember the smell of textiles mixed with the scent of sewing machine oil. Those memories have stayed with me for decades.
More than once, I fell asleep curled up on huge bales of crimplene. To this day, I have no idea why they felt so comfortable, but to a little girl surrounded by fabrics, colours and endless possibilities, they seemed like the perfect place to dream.
Perhaps that is why searching for vintage pieces means so much more to me than shopping.
Every time I find a beautiful dress or coat, I feel as though I am reconnecting with that little girl who was fascinated by fabrics and craftsmanship. When I run my hand across a piece of crimplene, I do not simply see a garment from the 1960s or 1970s. I remember afternoons spent in my grandmother’s home, surrounded by colours, textures and the quiet rhythm of making things by hand.
Vintage clothing allows us to wear history, but for me it also allows me to revisit my own.
Every carefully stitched seam reminds me that clothes were once made to last, and every label tells a story about the people who designed, made and wore a garment long before it found its way into my hands.
Perhaps that is the real reason I keep searching for vintage treasures. I am not only looking for beautiful clothes. I think I am searching for the same sense of wonder that surrounded me as a child and for the memories that come rushing back every time I touch a piece of fabric that feels familiar.
When I find the right piece, I do not simply see a dress or a coat. I remember where it all began.
